Bermuda pulled off a stunning upset of regional powerhouses and 2006 World Cup debutants Trinidad and Tobago at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Trinidad today.

Two clinically taken first-half goals from striker John Barry Nusum - who broke Shaun Goater’s World Cup qualifying scoring record - gave the ‘Gombey Warriors’ a hard fought win in the Caribbean. And they will now look to finish off the job when the teams meet again next Sunday at the National Sports Centre (NSC) for the second leg of their World Cup qualifier with Bermuda needing only a draw to advance in the competition.

Bermuda showed recently that they can compete at this level with back-to-back wins over Barbados on home soil. And today they proved those results were no fluke by getting past a star-studded Trinidad outfit.

"Unbelievable feeling. I'm extremely proud of everyone involved," commented Bermuda victorious coach Kenny Thompson.

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) executive Cal Blankendal, added: " Unbelievable! Trinidad went to the last World Cup and just finished playing against England. You always keep hope and now we must finish the job next week.”

Nusum gave Bermuda a dream start when he turned in a Khano Smith cross in the box to stun the home crowd after only eight minutes.

Nusum’s strike opened up the match with both teams creating chances before Bermuda’s hosts eventually equalized on 22 minutes through Southampton striker Stern.

Trinidad’s joy, though, would be short lived as Nusum restored Bermuda’s lead seven-minutes before the half when he slotted home a loose ball.

Trinidad upped the ante in search of an equaliser after the break, with John causing a few anxious moments in the visitor's defence. But the hosts failed to make the breakthrough allowing Bermuda to protect their one goal advantage and come away with a result that puts them in good stead heading home.
