A little help a long way from home
Southern Africa may be a long way to go, but there will be at least one Bermudian supporter backing Gus Logie?s men in Windhoek next weekend.
Lee Holder, the Bermuda Football Association?s safety and security committee chairman, used to live out in Namibia and will be acting as a go-between to help the side with any problems they encounter during the ICC Intercontinental Cup semi-final trip.
Holder, who used to live next door to the former captain of the Namibian cricket team, has already been invited to speak to Logie?s squad ahead of next week?s trip, giving them some background on the country and some basic dos and don?ts for the duration of their stay.
And he will also be on hand at the airport when they arrive and offering help, support, advice and contacts for the duration of their stay.
?I used to live down there until as recently as last year,? said Holder, who flies out tomorrow and will also be dealing with private business meetings while in Namibia.
?I still know a lot of people, obviously, so I?ll be able to help out where they need me. I have already spoken to the guys and given them information about the place and hopefully will be able to offer more advice for them when they are out there.?
Holder has also, with permission from the coach, made some provisional arrangements for recreational activities once the cricketing duties are over.
?It?s a great country,? continued Holder, who vowed to try and get some old friends out to support Bermuda, even though cricket isn?t a big spectator sport there.
?It?s very dry and it?s going to be very hot when we get there because the seasons are the other way around so the weather will be getting warmer.
?It?s a pretty safe place but, like anyway, there are certain precautions you need to take when you are there. I think the guys will enjoy the place and the Wanderers ground (where the final is to be played) is a really good facility.?
As well as acting as a liaison officer/tour guide, Holder is also going to be there as a supporter.
?When the cricket is on, I am going to be watching and supporting Bermuda,? he added.
?That goes without saying.?
