All-rounder Tota puts football first
It may not come as a surprise should talented teenager LoVintz Tota receive a call from the coaching staff at Manchester City in the near future.
Tota is coming off what might have been the finest moment of his young career.
The Devonshire Cougars player scored the local select's only goal during a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of City last Wednesday evening and received man-of-the-match honours. He was further rewarded with a place in the visiting City team for Friday night's match against North Village when he lined up against Shaun Goater, whose footsteps he hopes to follow in the English League.
While Tota didn't look out of place alongside some of the best young talent in England, he was unfortunate not to add his name to the scoresheet mid-way through the second half when he executed a spectacular scissors kick which narrowly missed the target.
“I really enjoyed the experience. They (City) are a wonderful bunch of guys,” said Tota. “I spent the day (Friday) with them and also had lunch and overall it was a wonderful experience.”
Tota could be faced with a difficult decision should he receive a call from City for trials. The all-round sportsman was recently awarded an athletics scholarship to attend further schooling overseas.
But he believes football would come first.
“I'd rather choose football. I'd rather play football professionally first because I can always go back to school with the money that I earn from playing football. If I were to take up the scholarship instead then I might never again have an opportunity to play professionally.”
Reflecting upon what might have been had the football Gods not conspired against him mid-way through the second half, Tota added: “I tried to get my head to the ball but I couldn't. So I attempted a scissors kick and tried to put it in the net. It was too bad that I missed because I really wanted to score in front of the home crowd.”
For the local teenager, it proved a busy weekend as only hours after suiting up for City, he took part in the national track and field championships, winning the long jump and finishing second in the 200 metres in his age group.
