Allison scores again - with 'biggest win of my life'
To play in Saturday's Amateur Match Play Championships, Dave Allison had to give up an afternoon of goalscoring with title-chasing Lobster Pot - but he didn't mind at all.
The Commercial A Division footballer romped to a six and five victory over former pro Anthony Mocklow and recorded “the biggest golfing win” of his life over 36 holes at Mid Ocean Club.
“Once I got to the final I knew I had to skip the football,” said Allison, who was enjoying the upscale presentation at the suave clubhouse at 5 p.m. on Saturday while his sweaty Lobster Pot team-mates were walking off after a victory against Devonshire Lions at a windy White Hill Field.
“This is a massive win for me, easily the biggest one of my career in golf. I can't really think of anything that comes close - I'm really happy about this.”
Despite a tortuous route to the final - gaining revenge over Mid Ocean member Blake Marshall for a previous defeat with a 19th hole quarter-final victory - it was a relatively straightforward win over Mocklow, despite the conditions.
“The wind was ridiculous,” continued Allison, a member at Port Royal.
“When I was standing there on the first tee, I wasn't sure if we were even going to start. I would compare it to the final day of the Open (where he shot close to three figures after being among the leaders after day one) but I coped better with the conditions this time.
“I think I shot a 77 on the first 18 which I was happy with considering the weather.”
Allison was three up at the break over Mocklow, the former club pro who regained his amateur status and now lives in England where he has qualified for this year's English Amateur Championships, and birdied three and four on the second round to go five up.
“At that point it was pretty much over,” continued Allison, sounding tired after his wet and windy 31 holes of golf.
“The fight ended and we just played out the last holes. It is my first big win and it means a lot to me in such a big tournament.
“Just getting to the final was great. I got to the semis once before but was beaten by Blake (Marshall) so it was great to get some revenge this time out.”
Although claiming it was “definitely worth missing the football for”, Allison's showed admirable devotion to his Pot team-mates, asking to be sent text messages of their progress as well as requesting the result from title-chasing rivals MR Onions' game.
The women's event, a battle between two Florida university combatants, was a closer affair.
Canadian Elise Brandt, who eased through to the final with a six and five win over Katrin Burnie, took on Natasha Morgan who had a semi-final walkover after Courtnay Montgomery withdraw with a knee injury.
Morgan, originally from Wales, triumphed three and two in a tight match which was spoilt as a golfing spectacle by the howling winds swirling around Mid Ocean Club.
Neither girl was able to attend the main presentation, however, as the two of them jumped into taxis to make the 3.55 p.m. flight to Atlanta.
