Arch rivals to do battle in the Cup
Arch rivals Devonshire Colts and Somerset Trojans will go ahead as scheduled with their Martonmere Cup clash this Saturday night at BAA Field.
Bermuda Football Association (BFA) made the announcement yesterday after earlier this week being forced to restore the pre-season competition's original format. They had sought to change the competition but came in for harsh criticism from club affiliates during the association's Annual General Meeting last week at Devonshire Recreation Club.
After reconsidering, BFA officials announced on Monday that they would revert to the previous format which will again see the top six teams from the Premier Division last season engage in a round robin tournament, the top four teams then advancing into the semifinals.
Devonshire Cougars, thrashed 4-1 by PHC last Saturday night at BAA Field, are the defending Martonmere Cup champions.
Saturday's match will again be preceded by aWomen's Konica Cup tie, with Dandy Stars and Prospect battling it out.
Martonmere Cup action then resumes on Tuesday, October 8 at Devonshire Rec Field when Premier Division League and FA Cup champions North Village and Friendship Trophy champions PHC square off in the night's opening match before Dandy Town and Somerset Trojans kick-off in the night-cap.
Tuesday, October 15 will see the final matches of the preliminary or round robin phase of the tournament when Dandy Town take on Devonshire Colts and North Village meet Cougars.
The semifinals will then be held on Tuesday, October 29 at Devonshire Rec. Field, while the semifinals of the women's Konica Cup are now slated for St.John's Field on Tuesday, October 22.
Both the 2002/03 Martonmere Cup and Konica Cup Finals are scheduled for Wellington Oval on Monday, November 11.
