Battle for promotion hots up

With the bulk of the Island?s Premier Division clubs having the weekend off, attention shifts to the First Division where a three-way race for promotion is expected to intensify.

Devonshire Colts hold a slim one-point lead over Ireland Rangers and Paget heading into tomorrow?s sixth round of league matches.

But that could all have changed by Sunday night as Colts come up against a vastly improved Paget Lions squad while Rangers should dispose of lowly X Roads Warriors in front of the latter club?s die-hard following at the small confines of Malabar.

Although Colts have yet to taste defeat in league play, the ?Orangemen? have been in somewhat of a rot lately, dropping valuable points in a 2-2 draw against Prospect and then being bundled out of the FA Cup at Rangers? expense.

And now they are about to come up against a Lions side on a mission.

?When I took over the team three years ago, I told them our goal was to first assemble a good blend of players and then challenge for promotion,? said Lions coach Brian (Bulla) Anderson.

?We managed to come third in the league last season and we also made it to the Shield Final.

?So our primary goal now is to fight for promotion . . . and I think we do have a realistic chance of going the distance this time around.?

Whether Paget have what it takes to go all the way will surely be tested tomorrow against a Colts side that has so far surpassed all expectations after losing several key players at the end of last season.

There could also be a few changes in mid-table over the weekend as Social Club, St.George?s and St.David?s each remain on six points with Wolves just a single point off the pace.

St.George?s host Social Club at Wellington Oval while the Islanders are away to Wolves at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Another team that could very well be on the move are Prospect who take on a struggling Hamilton Parish outfit at Police Field.

The 2002-03 FA Cup finalists have already qualified for the Shield semi-final while the club?s FA Cup hopes received a boost in confidence after they were paired against Valley FC in the second round of the competition.

However, Prospect coach Earl Basden doesn?t intend to take an unpredictable Peppers side too lightly.

?We?re looking to make inroads having got off to a slow start,? said Basden.

?Our spirits are high but we are not thinking beyond our next opponents. Parish are not having one of their most successful seasons, but on any given day they can show up and perform well and come away with a victory.?

Meanwhile, in this weekend?s sole Premier Division contest, bottom club Southampton Rangers host fifth placed North Village at Southampton Oval.
