Battle of 14 yellow cards
After a petulant match at National Sports Centre on Saturday ? in which 14 yellow cards were shown ? Polecats grabbed a 4-2 win from Upstarts to stay undefeated in the men?s league.
Upstarts had looked to be well in control of the match through much of the first half.
Donnie Moniz put them on the board first with a successful penalty corner conversion in the 20th minute. It was to be Upstarts only successful short corner in five attempts over the course of the match, however.
Just before the close of the first half, Upstarts were awarded a penalty stroke which captain Gareth Tavares slipped away to take them up 2-0.
Polecats were unable to get on the scoreboard before the break but did collect three yellow cards.
But the tide turned in the second half with Polecats evening the tally with back-to-back, successful short corners courtesy of Lloyd Hopkins and Carl Seale.
As both teams struggled to break the deadlock, yellow cards rained down ? it was an even day for offences with seven awarded to each side and both captains being sent off twice.
Polecats seized the advantage though and picked up a third goal on a penalty corner ? converting three out of eight opportunities on the day ? as Hopkins earned his second goal. A dying-minutes, open play goal from Jason Ming followed to secure the Polecats? win.
In other men?s play, Rebels collected a 4-3 result against Panthers.
Bert Rodney converted a short corner to put them up 1-0 early in the match but Matt Spencer soon pounced on an open play goal to draw Panthers even.
Panthers broke the deadlock deep in the second half as Stephen Troake found the net on a short corner routine but Rebels reversed the trend with three open play goals ? from David Gutteridge, Chris Rafferty and Russell Nayak ? shortly after.
Panthers? captain Justin Barritt grabbed back a goal for his side but it was too late to find a winner.
In women?s play, Swallows A side remains undefeated after an 8-2 thrashing of Wildcats on Saturday.
Captain Lucy Daynes racked up four goals in Swallows? winning effort with Joann Wilson pitching in for two and Jenny Burrell and Liz Hartley adding one each.
Susanna Almeida and Maria Pichery each scored for the Wildcats.
Canaries defeated Swifts in the weekend?s other A league face-off. Helen Arcand netted a hat-trick helping her team to the win while Lisa DeSilva put away the fourth goal.
Keishae Robinson and Ashley Fox each netted a goal to keep Swifts in the match.
Swifts turned the tables in the teams? B league showdown, however, with a 4-0 shut-out against a short-sided Canaries.
Robinson was on board for two Swifts? goals in this match while Jessica Patterson and Anna McBeath added one each.
Ravens B also collected three points on a 4-1 win against Cardinals, with Anna Heard, Louisa Freisenbruch, Alex Wheatley and Liz Gardner each supplying a goal toward the win. Jen White secured Cards? lone goal.
In the final B league match-up, Swallows collected a 1-0 win over Wildcats courtesy of a Mel Burns? goal in the second half.
