BCB set to name travelling squad
Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) are expected to announce a shortened list of players today who will embark on a ten-day training camp in Trinidad next month.
It is understood a travelling squad of 17 players was selected following Sunday?s national team practice session held at the National Sports Centre.
However, there was no word from the Board yesterday as to the names of those picked although one source close to the team said the final team could be ?announced via a press release? as early as today.
Clay Smith?s national squad depart for the Caribbean on April 5 where it?s anticipated former West Indies vice-captain and coach Gus Logie will officially take over as coach of the team on a short-term basis.
To date the Board have not confirmed whether Logie has agreed to the terms of any contract to officially succeed Mark Harper as national coach.
Harper?s contract expired last fall leaving former Bermuda skipper Wendell Smith to assume the coaching duties on an interim basis.
The Board revealed nearly two weeks ago that Logie had expressed an interest in taking on the post.
Last week BCB officials raised eyebrows when they announced that talented left-handed batsman Glenn Blakeney had been axed from the squad due to ?an insufficient attendance record? at practise sessions along with St.David?s fast bowler George O?Brien Jr.
St.George?s Cricket Club skipper Gregg Foggo ?voluntarily? withdrew from the training squad while youngsters Stephen Outerbridge and Jekon Edness have been unavailable due to school commitments.
Another St.George?s cricketer, Allan Douglas Jr, had his request to remain a part of the Under-19 national squad upheld.
It?s understood St.David?s all-rounders OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden were due to return to the Island on the weekend, having completed cricket studies at the Nelson Mandela International Cricket Academy in South Africa and are expected to rejoin the national team in the near future.
In July, Bermuda will compete with 12 Associate International Cricket Council (ICC) nations for one of five berths for the 2007 Cricket World Cup at the ICC Trophy tournament in Ireland.
Last summer saw the Island qualify for the ICC Trophy after finishing third among countries in their region during the Americas Championships held on local soil.
Bermuda will also compete in the three-day ICC Inter Continental Cup tournament in Toronto in August.
