Bell?s toll is three as West beats East

A Keith Bell hat-trick propelled West to victory over East during Friday night?s Cal DeShields Benefit All Star Match at the Den.

The PHC Raiders striker gave West the lead during an evenly-contested first half and then added two late second-half strikes to put the finishing touches to a clinical display of marksmanship that completely shattered the East?s hopes.

Colin Thompson, Bell?s Raiders team-mate, also converted in the West?s drubbing over a East side spearheaded by Ralph (Gumbo) Bean and Fred (Pinks) Lewis in attack.

West also had former Somerset Trojans? ?keeper Wayne Butterfield to thank as he executed countless saves to keep his team-mates in contention.

Keith DeShields ? brother of beneficiary Cal DeShields ? grabbed a late consolation for an East team that faded away in the latter stages of a match played in light drizzle and dipping temperatures.

Cal DeShields ? a former Southampton Rangers, Wolves, Hamilton Parish and Prison Officers footballer ? lost his sight in a road traffic accident last year.

After both teams had exchanged early blows, West finally went ahead for good when Bell grabbed a leaf from the book of brother Coolridge (Bumla) Bell by outpacing the East defence and steering the ball past ?keeper Deroy Butterfield.

Thompson then doubled the West?s lead midway through the second half when he bent the ball past Butterfield from the top of the 18-yard box.

From here it was all Bell who again relied on pace to break free of the East defence on two more occasions and confidently slot the ball past a stranded Butterfield after receiving excellent service from former Warwick United and Devonshire Cougars? defender David (Shaggy Dog) Wilson.

DeShields then finally found a way past Wayne Butterfield who turned back the clock to pull off a series of breathtaking saves between the uprights at the opposite end.

Upon the conclusion of the match, well-known coaches Kenny Bascome, Lionel Turner, Harold (Doc) Dowling, Arnold (Whitey) Ford and Trevor Smith were all honoured during a special presentation for their services to local football over the years.

Earlier, West and East played to a 1-1 stalemate in the over 35 All Star clash.

PHC Raiders? Sheridan (Baldy) Ming forged West ahead early in the first half only for former Wolves? striker Mandy Thomas to draw the teams ? both guilty of squandering golden opportunities to score ? level for good midway through the second half.

Former Dandy Town centre half Troy (Tortoise) Durham provided the night?s moment of comedy when he broke free of the West?s defence but pulled a hamstring just as he shaped up to shoot with only the ?keeper to contend with.

Durham was helped off the pitch by his team-mates and resigned to drinking his beverage of choice from the club?s balcony for the remainder of the match.
