Belmont take over at the top
Local clubs continued to make their mark as the 50th annual Goodwill Golf Championship reached the half-way mark yesterday with the 90 teams completing their second round at four different courses.
First-day leaders Tucker's Point, led by Kevin Benevides, slipped down to eighth in the net division, but their place at the top of the pile was taken by Belmont who are being spearheaded by the club's former pro Cornell Bean.
Bean, George Corday, Gary Edwards and Willie DeSilva sr. combined for an 11-under par 59 at Riddell's Bay yesterday to add to the 58 they fired at Port Royal a day earlier.
Their 117 net total (24-under-par) leaves the Warwick club - where the course is currently under renovation - in a share for top spot with defending champion St. Charles Country Club who enjoyed a 58 at Riddell's Bay yesterday after a 59 at Port Royal on Monday.
Pro Mike Sherman leads St. Charles with Oliver Plett, Charlie Spiring and Dominic Birisio making up the trio of amateurs.
One shot off the lead at 23-under-par (118) are Lambton Golf and Country Club, led by pro Dudley Jones, and Suffield Country Club for whom Stan McLennan is the professional.
After their first-day 54 at Riddell's Bay, Tucker's Point could manage only a 66 at Mid Ocean Club yesterday but are just three shots off the pace on 120.
In the gross division, Bob Duval - father of PGA Tour star David Duval - has helped fire his Florida team, Orange Park Golf and Country Club, into a commanding three-shot lead.
The team carded a superb 63 at Port Royal yesterday and now stand on 14-under-par 127 - three ahead of Belmont (64 yesterday) and Tim Conley's Avila Golf and Country Club who recorded a 68 at Port Royal.
In the individual pro event, which is being run this year on a stableford system over the entire four rounds, Sherman picked up 20 points at Riddell's Bay yesterday to take the overall lead in the junior division with a total of 41.
Kyle Phelps of Rhode Island Country Club picked up 19 points at Mid Ocean Club and is two behind on 39, tied with Conley, who scored 18 points at Port Royal yesterday.
Duval leads the senior division on 38 after scoring 16 at Port Royal yesterday while Paul Oglesby of Marion GC is two back on 36.
Players will enjoy a rest day today before the third round gets underway with an 8.30 a.m. shotgun start on Thursday morning. The tournament's final round is scheduled for Friday.
