Bermuda lose

Bermuda?s Under-21 hockey team were on the losing end in their final pool match at the Pan American Junior Championships in Puerto Rico, going down 5-1 to fifth-ranked Uruguay.

Bermuda started strongly with Stacey Paynter proving a threat at centre forward but Uruguay hit back with two early penalty corners which were well defended by Bermuda.

In the 26th minute, Erica Frith stunned the Uruguayans as she tipped in a powerful free hit from Keishae Robinson to give Bermuda a 1-0 lead. This seemed to wake up Uruguay as keeper Angela Dunstan saved Bermuda a minute later. However, in the 29th minute, Uruguay were awarded and converted a penalty stroke. As time ran out in the first half Uruguay were awarded a penalty corner which they converted with the last touch of the half to go ahead 2-1.

The South Americans earned an early penalty corner in the second half which Dunstan dramatically charged down but Uruguay converted the second chance to lead 3-1. They then added an open-play goal in the 42nd minute ? only the third open play goal in Bermuda have conceded in this tournament).

In the 57th minute Uruguay scored their final goal from another penalty corner.

Bermuda were scheduled to meet the Dominican Republic in classification matches yesterday.
