Bermuda miss out on Pan Ams
Bermuda's squash players will not be playing at the Pan Am Games.
The Island team of Tommy Sherratt, Nick Kyme, James Stout and Mel Caines finished 11th at the Pan American Championships in Quito, Ecuador.
Ironically, originally the top 12 teams would have travelled to the Pan Am Games next year, but a change in format at the 11th hour meant only nine places were up for grabs.
After failing to seal their place at the group phase, Bermuda fell into the consolation tournament, needing to win it to be sure of progressing.
After beating the Dominican Republic, the team needed to see off Paraguay but lost 3-0, making the final match against Chile meaningless barring for personal pride. They won that 2-1.
“We were shocked and disappointed,” said Stout of the Paraguay match. “We went out there and tried and they were just too good ... they ran us into the ground.”
