Veteran Bermuda swimmer Chris Smith, who has enjoyed several triumphs on the international stage during the last year, added to his medal collection at the World Masters Games in Edmonton, Canada last week.
In what was billed as the world?s largest-ever sporting event with over 21,000 athletes from more than 70 countries taking part in 27 major sports, Smith was the only Bermuda entry among 1400 who competed in the pool.
The Warwick resident, competing in the 70-74 age group, won a bronze medal in the 200 metres Individual Medley and finished fourth in the 400 metres IM.
He then won the silver medal in the three kilometre open water swim at Sylvan Lake south of Edmonton on the final day of competition.
Smith, who favours long distance swims and often trains along the South Shore in Paget and Warwick, was beaten out by his friend, South African Olympian Graham Johnston, a multiple world record holder who now resides in Texas, both competitors managing to hold off a strong contingent of Australians.
The next major event for Bermuda Masters swimmers is the All Americas Championships hosted by LatyCar in Sao Paulo, Brazil in early October when Smith is expected to be joined by at least a dozen other Island competitors.
A total of 65 bowlers in the handicap division and 58 in the scratch division from a field of 125 have qualified for the finals of the American Airlines Bowling Spectacular which get underway this evening at the Warwick Lanes.
Although the competition is now up for grabs, several names have been prominent in the handicap qualifying rounds with Oscar Andrade, Carl Reid, John Maycock, Antoine Jones, David Abraham and Damien Matthews among those who have repeated as prize winners during nine weeks of action.
The scratch division finals are expected to be equally competitive with the winners in both groups taking home a return air ticket to anywhere in the US, Canada or Mexico.
A prize-giving luncheon is scheduled for this Sunday.
