Bermuda taking 100-strong team to Island Games

Over 100 competitors in nine different sports will represent Bermuda at this month's NatWest Island Games in Guernsey.

While the Island's major sports, such as soccer, cricket and track and field, won't be sending teams, several less popular activities will have a presence as Bermuda makes its debut in the biennial festival, which began in 1985.

Saltus schoolteacher and prominent Bermuda Football Association member Jon Beard, who has coordinated the Island's first entry, confirmed yesterday that the sports of archery, badminton, basketball, cycling, gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, triathlon and volleyball would carry the Bermuda banner.

The Games get underway on June 28 and run until July 4.

Altogether 2,500 competitors from 23 islands will take part in a total of 15 different sports.

Other islands represented will be: Aland, Alderney, Caymans, Falklands, Faroe Islands, Froya, Gibraltar, Gotland, Greenland, Guernsey, Hitra, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Jersey, Orkney, Prince Edward Island, Rhodes, Saaremaa, Sark, Shetland Isles, St. Helena, Western Isles and Ynys Mon.
