Bermuda to join the jet set
Bermuda?s cricketers will be racking up their frequent-flyer miles in preparation for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) chief executive Neil Speight has revealed several potential tournament and match options which the Island?s cricket administrators are considering to ensure the country is as well prepared as possible for its showdown with cricket?s giants in two years? time.
?There?s a lot of plans in terms of where we might go to train. We?ve already approached the West Indies in terms of additional opportunities for matches whether it be in their domestic One-Day (tournament) or whether it be against West Indies ?A? or some of their regional sides,? he explained.
Speight also disclosed there may be ?opportunities to play against some of the other International Cricket Council (ICC) full-member (Test) teams?.
Faced with playing three teams from the sub-continent ? India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ? in Trinidad, Bermuda will be moving to improve their technique against spinners and to acclimatise to the spin-friendly surfaces which they are likely encounter in their Group B matches.
?That?s something we?re very aware of ? that we have to be better able to handle spinners ? and it will be an important aspect of our considerations. We had a very successful ten-day camp in Trinidad in April and we hope to have at least one visit ? if not two ? to that camp again which would give us a chance to play in the country where we will be stationed and play against people like (Dave) Mohammed and some of the other quality spinners down there,? stated the BCB official.
?Yes, we?re certainly going to factor that in. It?s going to obviously come down to timing, finances and availability. We?re looking for all the cricket brains to help put the plan together and hopefully we will get good support from Government and corporate Bermuda.?
The Island is also expected to compete in the former Six Nations tournament ? now rechristened the World Cricket League (Division One) ? which is comprised of Kenya plus the five Associate qualifiers for the World Cup.
?That?s slated to happen before the end of 2007 but the countries have been campaigning vigorously to have that played before the World Cup so there?s a good chance that will now happen in 2006,? he added.
?Additionally, according to the regional schedule, the Americas are due to have a tournament and that may give us the opportunity to add on a couple additional games against Canada at the end which obviously would have One-Day status.?
Then there?s also the Intercontinental Cup which is expected to be reformatted into a more global competition next year.
?Instead of having four regions with three teams each, the ICC are looking to make it an eight-team competition with two groups of four. If that came about, we would be in a group and have a minimum of three games of three-day cricket,? said Speight.
?So there are a lot of opportunities opening up for us now that Bermuda has attained a World Cup spot.?
On a related matter, the BCB chief executive stated the Board is seeking to have coach Gus Logie extend his working relationship with them.
?Gus is on a six-month contract which expires in September,? he said ?and we are currently in negotiations with him with a view to being able to sign him for the duration of the World Cup period.?
The motorcade to honour Bermuda?s cricket team for qualifying for the World Cup takes place at noon today in Hamilton.
After meeting Premier Alex Scott at the Cabinet Office, players and team management will travel to City Hall ? via Front, Queen and Church Streets ? for a half-hour ceremony. Thereafter they will be the guests of honour at a luncheon at La Coquille at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI).
