Bermuda?s pool of talent continue to reap rewards

Bermuda?s swim team return home today after an incredible trip to the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championship in which they picked up 24 medals, three regional records and 16 national and age group bests.

The final night of competition saw Graham Smith take gold in the 200m individual medley while lowering his Caribbean record with a swim of 2:13.25, unfortunately, however, it was not enough for Olympic qualification. Michael O?Connor picked up bronze in the same event in 2:19.51.

Earlier, O?Connor had taken another bronze in the 1,500m freestyle with a very determined swim in 18:20.99.

Anastasia Lau made it three for three in the breaststroke events as she captured her third silver in the girls 15 -17 age group 100m breaststroke with a superb time of 1:17.41.

The final swim for the Bermuda contingent was the bronze medal performance of the girl?s 11 and 12 age group quartet in the 4 x 100m medley relay. The backstroke lead-off was by Rebecca Sharpe, next was Catriona Brewin on the breaststroke leg, followed by Kaitlyn Miller doing butterfly and anchored by Nicole Yearwood with freestyle. The girls lowered their seed time by over three seconds, to 5:01.51, in a tremendous battle with Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Their efforts were also rewarded with an age group record.

The record haul of 24, which included three golds, nine silver and 12 bronze left Bermuda in sixth place in the medal table, no mean feat for one of the least populous competitors in the competition.
