BFA seek info on ?ineligible players?

An international news agency yesterday reported that Bermuda Football Association were questioning the eligibility of players in the British Virgin Islands team that knocked Bermuda out of the Caribbean Digicel Cup just over a week ago.

Both BFA president Larry Mussenden and general secretary David Sabir have refused to comment on reports that the local governing body were considering lodging an official protest to CONCACAF.

However, the Associated Press reported from Kingstown, St. Vincent, yesterday that Sabir had written a letter to his St. Vincent football federation counterpart Earl Bennett for further information on the matter, and a copy of that letter had been sent to Caribbean Football Union (CFU) general secretary Harold Taylor.

Bermuda were beaten 2-0 by BVI in their final group match and eliminated from the competition but it was known last week that both national coach Kyle Lightbourne and other members of Bermuda?s delegation as well as St. Vincent officials were concerned by the make-up of the BVI team.

BVI?s win meant they advanced to the second round where they are due to host Grenada in the first leg this coming Sunday.

But were it proved that they fielded ineligible players against either Bermuda or St. Vincent in the first round, they could be booted out of the competition and Bermuda reinstated.

According to yesterday?s AP report, Sabir believes goalkeeper Montgomery Butler, defender Avondale Williams and midfielder Venton James all played for St. Vincent in past regional competitions.

St. Vincent general secretary Bennett was quoted by AP as saying: ?We are working assiduously to get this information to (CFU general secretary) Mr. Taylor because with the next round set to get going this weekend they would need to make a decision if teams are to be switched.?

Players who compete for one national federation at senior level in a competition leading to a FIFA tournament are ineligible to represent another.

Bennett said he was contacted by Taylor on Saturday seeking information on the case.

James scored both goals for the British Virgin Islands in their victory over Bermuda.
