Big chance for cup minnows
Bermuda's lower league soccer clubs will be hoping for a plum tie when the draw for the first round of the FA Cup is made today.
In a change from previous years, Bermuda Football Association are reverting to a format which sees all the Island's clubs in the hat from the off.
In the past the Association has not included the Premier League clubs in the opening draw.
But Association chairman of competitions, Charles Clarke, said by including them this time around it would increase the excitement for all concerned. "I am hoping that because all the names are included this time that it will be quite interesting," said Clarke. "We have tried this format before of using everybody and we have tried the format of letting the Commercial and First Division teams play first. The Premier teams then came in in the next round.
"We are looking for a bit of excitement. If you see match up of, say for instance, Robin Hood and North Village or MR Onions and Devonshire Cougars it could lead to an interesting game.
"I recall Devonshire Cougars playing St George's All-Stars a few seasons ago and Cougars coming out only 1-0 winners, the goal being scored in the 80th minute."
Clarke said such matches could also bring in much-needed cash.
"It should be very good for revenue, depending on who everyone meets," he added. "You can always get that giantkiller."
The draw will take place at 2.00 p.m. and matches will be played on October 14 and 21.
The women's first round will take place on January 20 and that draw will be made in conjunction with the men's third round draw.
