Blazers blow chance to go clear

Boulevard's Jahmarley Samuels (centre) outjumps Paget 'keeper Wayne Smith and defender Marvin Belboda at BAA yesterday.

Boulevard Blazers? coach John Rebello was left fuming after his side?s title charge suffered another blow at BAA yesterday when the league leaders blew what should have been a straightforward three points against basement-dwellers Paget.

A clearly stunned Rebello wasn?t pulling any punches as he questioned his players? commitment and desire.

?The young guys are just not up to the challenge at the moment,? he said.

?We could blame injuries and suspensions but at the end of the day there is enough talent in our team to get the job done. It?s incredibly frustrating.

?Guys are skanking in training ? the commitment is just not there. Today we must have had 90 percent of the possession but we hardly did anything with it. Stanton (Lewis) and Chisy (Melchisedec Gibbons) are a big miss but really there?s no excuse for the way we?re playing.?

Despite commanding the lion?s share of possession and looking comfortably the more talented outfit, Rebello?s men were made to pay for an almost total lack of cutting edge in the final third as a brave, hard-tackling Paget side predictably defended in numbers.

The result means Boulevard have taken only one point from their last two games after last week?s defeat to Devonshire Cougars and they lie just four points ahead of North Village and Somerset Trojans, who have played one game less.

The Lions, meanwhile, are still bottom by one point behind PHC.

Even without the injured Lewis and their suspended playmaker Gibbons, Boulevard still looked dangerous going forward in the first half with Ricky Saltus and Angelo Simmons enjoying a considerable amount of freedom on the flanks and midfielder Dwight Warren causing Paget?s back line plenty of headaches with his penetrative, direct dribbling.

But despite the pressure, clear-cut chances were few and far between for Blazers as final balls consistently missed their target and long-range shots flew high and wide.

And as so often happens in such situations, Paget then scored against the run of play as with only seconds to go in the half, Boulevard?s defenders were caught napping high up the pitch to let in Youseff Pitt, whose uncontested shot from 15 yards gave Michael Higgs in the Boulevard goal absolutely no chance.

Clearly incensed, coach Rebello could be heard screaming at his team at the break, imploring them to demonstrate greater urgency.

And initially they responded, laying siege to the Paget goal once play resumed before eventually being rewarded with a headed equaliser from substitute Dwolde Place, on as a replacement for the injured Shaki Crockwell who was nursing a sore ankle.

Once again, however, Blazers simply weren?t able to translate their dominance into goals ? though they could perhaps count themselves a trifle unlucky after two successive shots from Simmons and substitute Takeyhi Walker were cleared off the line in the dying minutes.
