Blazers breathe easier after narrow win

Boulevard gave themselves a little breathing room at the top of the First Division after a hard-fought 3-2 victory away to Prospect yesterday.

With the out-of-sorts Somerset Eagles held to a 1-1 draw at home by Ireland Rangers, the Blazers moved three points clear thanks to Melchisedic Gibbons' winner in the 63rd minute.

Until then, and perhaps a little after, Boulevard were given all they could handle by a Prospect team who have carried on their good form from just before the mid-season break.

Michael Parsons put the visiting team ahead in the 12th minute but Clifford Roberts, the former Bermuda defender, equalised 10 minutes later and Phillip Bailey gave Boulevard cause for concern when he scored in the 31st minute.

Parsons grabbed his second with seven minutes remaining in the half and the winning goal came after Takeyhi Walker's shot beat the goalkeeper but came back off the bar for Gibbons to tap into an unguarded net. Prospect missed an opportunity to get a deserved point when Vic Ball shot wide after cashing in on the indecision of Mitchelle Trott and Leroy Stevens and racing in alone on goal.

At White Hill Field, Eagles were left to count the cost of a penalty miss in their clash with west-end rivals Rangers.

The home side were ahead already after a second-minute goal by Rodr? Wilson when Stephen Burrows had his spot-kick saved by Leslie Trew. The situation became acute for Eagles when Mel Brangman drew Rangers level in the 27th minute.

Otis Minors, given special dispensation to play by Bermuda Football Association after it was reported earlier that he was suspended for a game, scored four goals in seven second-half minutes to lead St. David's to a 6-1 romp over Young Men's Social Club.

Kevin Lambe netted in the 14th and 30th minutes to give the home team a cushion before Minors, who was sat down for a prior match after collecting three cautions, scored in the 53rd, 55th, 58th and 60th minutes to turn the match into a rout. Tyrone Quinn provided consolation for the low-flying Bluebirds in the 67th minute.

The remaining game saw Southampton Rangers and Paget play to a 1-1 draw. Trevor Simons put Paget ahead on the stroke of half-time but they could not deny the home team their equaliser, struck with ferocity from more than 25 yards by Jason Raynor with nine minutes to go.
