Blazers looking forward to `family affair'

Boulevard are within a game of making a first Martonmere Cup final appearance since 1998.

The Blazers, three-time winners of the competition, ousted defending champions Devonshire Colts 2-0 on Sunday, the same team they defeated in 1993-94 en route to a maiden cup triumph.

But while pleased by the team's recent performance, official Amon Brown reckons there's still room for improvement.

"Our back line and our midfielders are playing alright but I think we just need to polish up a bit up front," he pointed out yesterday.

"But I never doubted the guys and, like I previously stated, as long as they went out there for an outright win then everything would be fine. They did and we got the desired result.

"Everything is coming along quite well and we are pretty much beginning to gel - we just need to get the front line to gel a little bit more."

Blazers will now take on cross-town rivals Devonshire Cougars in what Brown described as a "family affair" in the semi-finals to be held at a date still to be determined.

"It's always a derby match between us and Cougars," he said. "We all see each other on a pretty much regular basis and there are a lot of family ties between us. So all I can say is may the best team win on the day. We are friends off the pitch but on the pitch it's all about the team. And you can't be friends when you are playing."

Reflecting on Sunday's result, Brown added: "A win is always positive for us. Now we have to build on it."

The former player feels his team should have grabbed at least a share of the spoils against North Village. Blazers lost that contest 3-2.

" I still feel we should have left that match with a draw," he said. "But it was still a confidence booster - even though we lost the match. Had we capitalised on our chances then we would have beaten them."

Thus far, there hasn't been any sign of the Caisey brothers, Albert or Clinton, while towering defender Mitchell Trott continues to assist on the sidelines.

The veteran player gave some indication of a possible return to the team when he was seen warming up prior to Sunday's match.

However, Brown was quick to erase those thoughts.

"I think that was something he felt like doing," he said. "And as for the Caisey brothers, I don't think any of them will be playing this season. Albert, I think, has gone into retirement and I don't know what's up with Clinton. But I do know Taur (Caisey) is building onto his house or something like that."
