Borden tipped to make debut
Young St. David's all-rounder Delyone Borden is being strongly tipped to be among the new faces in the St. George's Cup Match team when it is chosen tomorrow evening.
The 17-year-old is a favourite of Gladwin Paynter, chairman of the east end club's selectors, and he doesn't hide the fact that he will be throwing his support behind the promising teenager.
"I certainly have him down on my personal team. He is a fine player and has proven himself all season to have the ability to perform at this level," said Paynter.
The chairman believes that Borden will also get the support of other selection panel members, particularly if he puts in a solid performance in tomorrow's final trial match at Wellington Oval.
At least three changes are expected from last year's St. George's team through the absence of players who have not been active this season.
"I figure there will be at least three and possibly as many as four changes to the team this year, and I can honestly say that we have a pool of talented senior and youth players to pick from as replacements," added Paynter.
In addition to Borden, the other the young players who will be considered are all-rounder O.J. Pitcher who was injured last year after playing the year before, all-rounder Travis Smith, wicketkeeper Fred Hall Jr. and opening bowlers George O'Brien and Mackie Crane.
Among the veterans chasing a spot are all-rounder Peter Philpott and medium pacer Gary Brangman.
Those in last year's team who will not be considered this time around because they have been absent from the sport for various reasons are opening bowler Dale Fox, spinner David Adams and wicketkeeper Jason Anderson.
Adams was the lone spinner last year but Paynter believes that the selectors may lean towards including two slow bowlers this time.
"We may take two spinners which is something we didn't have last year. The two in the running are Travis Smith and Peter Philpott."
Fast bowling appears to be in good hands with Herbie Bascome, Gregg Foggo, Lionel Cann, veteran Brangman and newcomers Crane and O'Brien.
Although Glenn Blakeney is favoured to be chosen as wicketkeeper, teenager Hall could offer a serious challenge if he gives a good account of himself in the final trial.
St. George's batting runs deep although who opens the innings could create much debate among selectors.
Blakeney is a certainty for one spot but his partner a year ago, Phillip Pitcher, could be challenged as Clay Smith, Peter Philpott or Mark Ray could also be considered.
Tomorrow's final trial is at Wellington Oval, starting at 10 a.m. and the teams are as follows:
