North Village and Devonshire Stars will renew rivalry this Sunday in a second meeting in successive weeks in a bid to avoid ending up with the Commercial Cricket League's wooden spoon.

Last Sunday, in a fixture rearranged by mutual agreement from June 17, the bottom two sides had to settle for five points apiece after the heavy rain that swept across the island forced the abandonment of their fixture at Shelly Bay.

Last-placed Stars currently trail Village by six points and will need an outright victory over their rivals in this Sunday's game at Sea Breeze Oval to prise themselves off the bottom. Last season Village finished bottom, 17 points adrift of Stars.

Both teams turned out in force last Sunday after the Cup Match holiday _ a free week for the remaining Commercial sides _ and Village had reached a comfortable 57 for two from 13 overs when play was called off.

Opener Dion Ball was bowled off his pads for four by Andre Smith with the total six and it became 53 for two when fellow opener Mike Payne was run out for 18. Number three Kenny Thompson was unbeaten on 22.

Village and Stars have one additional league match left each _ on August 19 when three rearranged games are on tap _ against Leg Trappers and new champions St. David's respectively.

The May 13 Leg Trappers-Village match, as well as the May 27 game between West Indian Association and Watford Sports Club, failed to go ahead because of administrative problems at Police Field while Stars and St. David's were unable to start their June 24 fixture at Garrison Field because a pub game was already in progress.

Forties, the 2000 champions, and Jamaican Association, currently in second place, wrap up their league schedules this weekend.

Forties, in third spot, will attempt to avenge an earlier six-wicket defeat at Police Field by taking on West Indian Association at Shelly Bay while Jamaican Association will aim for the double over Watford Sports Club at the Royal Naval Field after winning the first match by default.

Elsewhere, Leg Trappers, who gained a "winning" draw in the earlier fixture at Sea Breeze Oval, travel to Lord's to take on St. David's, who crashed to a nine-wicket defeat against the Jamaicans at Shelly Bay two weeks ago when playing three short having already sealed their first league title.

"We're treating it as a test for our expected semi-final showdown against St. David's in the knockout," said Trappers' spokesman James Broadbent.

To ensure that semi-final clash, Leg Trappers must first overcome Stars and St. David's have to dispose of Village in the first round of the knockout which has been pushed back to August 26.

The semi-finals are set for September 2 with the final on September 9 at a venue yet to be decided.
