Bray hoping to bring home the beer again
Island number one Andy Bray is going for his third title in four years in the domestic curtain raiser ? although this year there will be no Heineken with which to toast his victory.
The first tournament of the year will simply be named the BLTA Open after Heineken withdrew their lengthy sponsorship following last year?s competition but that doesn?t make Bray any less keen to complete a third victory in four years.
?This was the first tournament I won, three years ago,? said Bray, who became the first local wildcard to win a match in the XL Open qualifying against a pro in many years when he beat Wkwesi WIlliams at Coral Beach.
?It is a special one for me and I?m looking forward to playing it again ? although it?s a shame there?ll be no Heineken, because that always used to bring down the crowds!?
After the excitement of the XL, where Bray took on former French Open quarter-finalist Michael Russell in the second qualifying round, the Island?s top player returns to the bread and butter of the domestic season, where he is looking to complete the rarely-achieved Grand Slam.
?I am feeling fit as a fiddle at the moment and will be doing my best to try and win as many tournaments as possible,? said Bray who won the first three tournaments of the year before losing to James Collieson in the Southampton Grand Prix.
?These tournaments mean a lot to me and I will be giving my all.?
Main rival Collieson ? who withdrew from his XL Open match 5-0 down in the first set against Israeli Harel Levy with golfer?s elbow ? is missing from this tournament, leaving the main challenges to Bray coming from youngster David Thomas, third seed David Jenkins and new arrival and second seed Samitha Ranaweera, who has played four Davis Cup games for Sri Lanka.
?It will be good to have a fresh challenge,? added Bray in relation to Ranaweera, who works for Marsh and also played in the XL qualifiers, going down 6-0, 6-0 to American Nykita Kryvonos.
?The more strong players here the better.?
With Collieson injured, Bray will partner Jenkins in the doubles with Ranaweera teaming up with Jacob Trott.
Nearly 50 have registered for the two men?s divisions with 16 pairs entered in the double. The ladies? field, however, only totals single figures with Ashley Brooks, Tara Lambert and Veronica Dunkerley likely to be the main challengers.
