Bromby eyes top ten finish
If the last two years are any indicator, Peter Bromby stands a strong chance of attaining his goal in the Bacardi Cup.
"I think realistically a good result is anywhere in the top ten with the level of competition that will be there although, I am sure, some people will have higher expectations (of me) since I've been third and first in the last two years," said the 2001 winner who will be among a sizeable fleet competing in the event in Florida, USA.
Racing starts on Sunday and continues daily with one race each day, beginning around 11 a.m. at Coral Beach Yacht Club. Between 70 and 100 competitors are expected to participate in the Star class regatta which features longer courses.
"The multiple-race days tend to be shorter races. These will be different - probably ten to 12-mile races. There will be longer distances to the lay lines," added Bromby.
"That actually suits us a bit. We tend to gamble a bit more than most off the starting line so these courses could actually help us."
Bermuda's Male Athlete of the Year thinks his main competition will come from Americans Mark Reynolds and Paul Cayard as well as current world champion Ian Percy of Great Britain. Still, he is confident that he and his crew, Martin Siese, can excel.
"I think we can compete with all of them. It's a sport that you need a few breaks in and if we catch a few breaks, especially early in the regatta, it will go well for us."
