Brooks stuns Open top seed

Ashley Brooks pulled off a stunning upset yesterday when she defeated Bermuda's top-ranked female player Zarah DeSilva in the Colonial Open tennis tournament.

The 13-year-old Brooks recovered well after being brushed aside in the first set to oust the top seed and Fed Cup player DeSilva 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

DeSilva, 17, eased through the first set 6-1, with a slugfest of precision which, despite a gallant effort, proved too much for Brooks.

However, in the second set the feisty Brooks showed a high level of maturity when she took the game away from DeSilva by taking the pace off DeSilva's ball, using lobs and slices to slow down the game.

DeSilva started to lose patience and made several unforced errors, consistently hitting balls into the net, the alley and beyond the baseline and soon found herself beaten.

Sasha Fisher, 14, ran off a straight-sets victory over her Fed Cup team-mate Tara Lambert while in the Ladies B, second seed Zina Edwards had to dig deep at 5-2 down in the second set tiebreak, to stave off a challenge by unseeded Midge Oliver 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 and then went on to defeat Lisa DeSilva in straight sets.

Pat Pamplin pulled off an unexpected straight sets win over 15-year-old Rachel Sawdon 6-2, 6-2.

In men's B action, unseeded Ben Dier upset fifth seed Howard Cross 6-3, 7-5 while in men's A, unseeded Chris Watson dispatched the number two seed Eldon Daniels with a 6-4, 6-2 rout, and John Johnston upset tennis pro Earl Leader 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Johnston then paired with Nick Frost and though unseeded, they were good enough on the day to upset third seeds John Moore and Vidar Lunoe 6-4, 7-6 after winning 10-8 in the second set tie-break.
