Caisey cleans up against hapless Jamaicans

Fast bowler Chris Caisey claimed seven wickets to beef up newcomers Hamilton Parish?s Commercial Cricket League title challenge while butter-fingered Forties just held on to their 100 percent record by completing a thrilling last-over victory over Fine Leg Byes.

Caisey?s haul ? the league?s best figures of the season ? knocked over Jamaican Association for 71 while defending champions North Village also skittled out West Indian Association for 71 to get their own title challenge back on track after losing to Parish the previous week.

Fine Leg Byes made a solid start after being sent in by Forties at the Royal Naval Field, skipper Ishwar Narayanan (47) and Ronnie Nathu (29) adding 61 for the first wicket.

Nick Leeding chipped in with 29 but FLB?s middle order faltered with five wickets going down for five runs as they slipped to 124 for seven before the tail, led by Fabian Bishop?s 20, wagged, the innings closing on 175 in the final over.

Opener bowler Blake West took his season?s tally to 18 wickets, claiming five for 41 from 14 overs while Yatin Gawas bagged three for 44 from 12 overs and skipper Gordon Campbell two for 34 from seven.

Forties fell behind the clock in their run chase but were given fresh impetus by a fourth-wicket stand of 58 in 54 balls by Rohan Davis (33) and Brian Brangman (28) which carried the total to 161.

Despite some heart flutters in the last four overs Forties eventually edged home with four balls to spare. Earlier Gladwin Ingham topscored with 39 from 67 balls while opener Braxton Stowe pulled a hamstring and had to retire hurt on 28 after facing 79 balls. Ajit Tiwary had the best figures for FLB of one for 14 from five overs.

The injury is expected to force Stowe out of Sunday?s key match against North Village, who have overcome the loss of Allen Richardson to Parish by signing former Barbados wicketkeeper Ricky Hoyte.

?Fine Leg Byes were helped by some dire catching on our part with at least seven catches put down ? four of them off Blake,? said Campbell.

Only Keniek Wallen, who made 22, offered any resistance for the Jamaicans whose total included 13 wides at Shelly Bay against the rampant Caisey, who finished with seven for 34 from 14.5 overs.

Parish, who are joint top with Forties on 40 points but from a game more, reached their target for the loss of four wickets in 22.2 overs with Richardson leading the way with an unbeaten 22. Daniel Edwards, the pick of the Jamaican attack on his club debut, took two for eight from two overs.

?We had five key players missing, including David Gibbs and Lloyd Morrison, but it was poor batting on our part,? admitted Jamaican Association spokesman Glenmore Barrett.

Hoyte, who has switched from WIA, didn?t bat or bowl against his former team-mates on his first appearance of the season.

Reggie Benjamin and Rudy Smith polished off WIA in 20 overs at Southampton Oval, Smith taking five for 28 from 10 overs and Benjamin five for 36, also from 10.

Like Forties? West, it was the third time Benjamin has taken at least five wickets in an innings this season, matching West?s tally of 18 wickets.

Five players were out for ducks and only Chris Clarke (27) and skipper Jerry Callender (17) offered any resistance on a pitch that kept low early on after WIA, who welcomed back fast bowler Anthony Brathwaite (nought for 12 from five overs) and batsman Dave Greenidge for their seasonal debuts, were sent in.

Thirty-two extras, including 13 wides, accounted for almost half of Village?s reply of 72 for two in 17.3 overs.

Mike Payne (17 not out) and Allan Walker (16) put on 60 for the first wicket to ensure victory.

?This was the best team I?ve had for the entire season but we still got easily beaten,? said WIA skipper Jerry Callender. ?But I?m expecting us to have a better second half of the season.?
