Campbell?s six-pack fires Forties to comfortable victory
Gordon Campbell's first six-wicket haul in more than a decade helped Forties demolish Jamaican Association and join Hamilton Parish and North Village on 50 points at the halfway point of what is shaping up to be an exciting three-way chase for the Commercial Cricket League title.
An unbeaten 47 by Ricky Hoyte spearheaded Village's emphatic seven-wicket win over bottom club Western Stars while Fine Leg Byes opted for football over cricket and disappointingly defaulted their scheduled match against West Indian Association with only eight players available.
FLB spokesman Angus Lynn said the match scheduled for Shelly Bay, the league's premier venue, was finally called off on Saturday after his team could not raise a full team because of injuries and the fact most of their squad wanted to watch what turned out to be a lacklustre World Cup match between England and Ecuador.
As it is, the league have already postponed the three July 9 matches until the end of the season to allow players to watch the World Cup final.
Unaware the Shelly Bay match was off, 10-man Forties and Jamaican Association trudged out to the east end where they had to cope with ankle-high grass in some parts of Garrison Field, making it difficult for batsmen to play their shots.
Only opener Norman Godwin (14), Lloyd Morrison (16) and Junior Lindo (13) offered any resistance as the Jamaicans were bowled out for 75 in the 28th over after winning the toss, skipper Campbell claiming six for 23 from nine overs while David DeSilva took four for 39 from 13.4 overs.
"It must be my first six-wicket haul in more than 10 years," said 54-year-old Campbell, who has lost a yard or two of his once lively pace in recent seasons.
"I just bowled straight and full and they swung all around it."
Forties took 27.1 overs to complete a crushing win, Gladwin Ingham (29 not out) and Harold Minors (17 not out) completing the task after opener Gerald Bean made 16.
Hoyte's 25-ball 47 not out, following his match-winning half century against Forties the previous week, included four sixes and four fours as Village reached their victory target in 26 overs after Western Stars were dismissed for 100 in the 33rd over at St. John's Field, teenager Makai Campbell top-scoring with 19.
Kevin Mallory (three for 12 from 3.3 overs), skipper Ricky Hill (three for 19 from seven) and Reggie Benjamin (two for 37 from nine) did the bulk of the damage for Village.
Nineteen-year-old former Bailey's Bay batsman Dion Ball jr marked his return to Village by making 28.
Hamilton Parish, whose only defeat came in their first match when they were bundled out for 30 by Forties and have gone from strength to strength since, get their chance to seek revenge when the teams meet at Shelly Bay on Sunday. Rumours are rife that dashing but enigmatic former Bermuda batsman Glenn Blakeney is set to make his Parish debut.
Having been denied a game on Sunday, WIA will go a month without a fixture as they have the bye on Sunday and will have to wait until July 16, when they face Western Stars at Shelly Bay, to see action again.
"A lot of our players play Evening League cricket but we were quite disappointed not to play on Sunday. Our guys really wanted to play but Fine Leg Byes gave us plenty of notice the game was off," said WIA spokesman Barry Richards.
Even big-hitting policeman Andy Boyce, who has been plagued by knee trouble for some years, "wanted to come out of retirement for that game because he really enjoys playing against Fine Leg Byes", added Richards.
