Canaries in 14-goal feast
Canaries trampled Police Orioles 14-1 on the weekend to maintain their dominance of the women?s A hockey league.
Much of the scoreline was determined in the first half ? Canaries walking into the break with a 9-1 lead.
The only goal for Police came from a penalty stroke which trickled under the foot of the Canaries? goalie Tami Ray in the first half.
Canaries dominated with impressive touch passes and beautifully placed goals.
They were able to place many of their shots into the corners of the net or make precise passes around the goalie and defenders.
In the first half Emma Kelly scored once, Emma Simmons three times, Lisa DeSilva twice, Rhonda Rawlins twice, with Stacey DeShield notching the ninth goal.
Rawlins grabbed her third opportunity to score when she was awarded a penalty stroke after her hard shot at goal was illegally stopped by one of the defenders on the line.
Police Orioles responded to the pressure by pulling most of their players into the defensive half but it made no difference.
Canaries continued their rampage with three more goals from scoring machine Lisa DeSilva and a final goal from Michelle Ming.
The B squad for Canaries picked up a more humble victory over Orioles, 1-0. The only goal of the match came late in the second half when Helen Court swept in at the far post after a hit-out from Joanna Stapff came high into the D, was passed on by Rhiannon Bedford and Susie Mills to a waiting Court at the posts.
In other play, Ravens A were able to secure their second victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Swifts.
Ravens jumped onto the scoresheet with a hard, clean shot from Caroline Black at the top of the D from a short corner early in the first half.
Just ten minutes later, Ana Abend neatly picked up a long pass from Black and drove into the Swifts circle to slot the ball home with a hard push. The half-time score was 2-0.
The B version of this match ended in a 2-2 draw after a see-saw battle. Ravens were on the board first as cohesive midfield played by Ros Hanson, Emma Timperley and Rachel Smith enabled an early shot to be taken by Leslie Whorrall which beat the goalie and rolled along the line just in time for Jennifer Simmons to tap it in for an early lead.
Despite more than their fair share of possession Swifts could not put together the teamwork to score. Ravens? Maggie Pocock and Kristen Rego made an outstanding display of clean defensive tackling and Ravens only surrendered one short corner during the entire first half.
It took an excellent solo run from 35 yards out for Swift Tse Minors to even the score at the half.
Amy Smith was fouled on the penalty spot in the act of shooting early in the second half and converted the resulting stroke to take Swifts up 2-1.
Ravens soon grabbed an equaliser, however. A free ball in Swifts? D was quickly picked up by Simmons who released a hard stinger for her second goal of the day.
Scrapping with Cardinals on Saturday, Bluebirds grabbed a 2-1 victory in A play. Most Cards appeared tired, however, as many had played the earlier B match in which they neatly secured a 4-0 victory to climb to the head of the B league.
Cards connected off a lucky rebound to score first but the second half was dominated by the Blues and Deanna Didyk and Jo Ann Wilson put the goals in place for the win.
