Celebratory kick makes me City laughing stock
I really put my foot in it, so to speak, during our terrific 2-0 victory over Birmingham City at the weekend.
Celebrating Nicolas Anelka's late goal at St. Andrews I was so elated that we finally had our first away win of the season that I kicked an advertising hoarding behind the goal.
I was like 'Get in!' but unfortunately I didn't hit the sign properly, half caught the top of it and immediately felt a twinge in my knee.
Nicolas went into the crowd to celebrate and the referee came over to tell Eyal Berkovic and I to stay where we were. So there I am celebrating, telling Eyal not to go into the crowd and holding my knee at the same time.
The match restarted but when I went to chase down a ball I realised I couldn't and had to pull up.
As the match was nearly over it didn't make sense to carry on for the remaining four or five minutes so I told the bench I needed to come off.
When I informed the manager, Kevin Keegan, he couldn't believe I'd owned up to what I'd done. He told me I should have said I'd injured myself during the game and thought it was bizarre that I had actually told the truth.
The team gave me some stick and I was the laughing stock in training yesterday.
Thankfully, no real harm has been done. I had it checked out on Sunday and I trained without any discomfort yesterday so there should not be a problem as we prepare for Saturday's match against West Brom.
All games are important in the Premiership but this weekend's match is doubly so because of the proximity between the two teams in the league. We are 16th on 11 points and West Brom are 18th, a point behind.
I think it will be a difficult game because they do their homework and will do their best to make life hard for us.
Although they are down near the bottom of the table they don't seem to lose by many goals and we will have to make the best of any chances that come along.
Hopefully I have done enough to keep my place in the side, although it would be nice to get on the scoresheet.
To have one of your strikers scoring regularly is good but to have both finding the back of the net is even better.
Saturday's result was an all round performance. We scored twice with the goals coming from a striker in Nicolas and defender Jihai Sun, and kept a clean sheet.
We were all very pleased but are also aware that we need to repeat this performance on a regular basis before we can say that we have truly turned the corner.
As I know all too well football can be a cruel game and a kick in the face can be just around the corner. But you can rest assured that we'll all be doing our best to make sure that doesn't happen.
