Clico injuries forced match postponement

Injuries to three members of Trinidadian club side Clico Preysal forced organisers to postpone yesterday?s tour match involving a National XI and the visiting Caribbean team at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

The two sides were originally scheduled to play what would have been a second straight 50 overs contest in 48 hours, but will now instead lock horns today at the NSC, beginning at 3 p.m.

Clico team officials confirmed yesterday that three of their players are harbouring various knocks, but declined to reveal their identities.

?Because for us this is pre-season training I think a lot of the players would not have been fit coming to Bermuda. And because of the high intensity of the 20/20 game and then a 50 over game some injuries occurred,? explained Clico coach and former West Indies fast bowler Tony Gray.

?We have to take into consideration a lot of young players are here on tour and they would not have been accustomed to these sort of rigours of the two types or styles of one day cricket.

?So that?s the reason why we picked up probably about three injuries here and there. We probably have one serious injury (ankle) while the others are just niggling injuries.?

The Caribbean side arrived in Bermuda last Sunday with only a 13-member squad.

And so far Gray ? who claimed 22 wickets in only five Test match appearances ? is generally pleased with the way the tour has panned out.

?We?re doing quite well and the only concern I have as coach of Clico Preysal is that we are dependent on Shazan Babwah too much,? he said.

?I think we have good batting talents, people who have played regional Under 19 cricket and regional Under 15 cricket. And we also have good enough talent for us to have a collective effort rather than just a one man show in Babwah ? especially with the bat. But we expect our batsmen to come to good at some point.?

In terms of his team?s bowling, Gray also seemed satisfied.

?The bowlers have been a little bit more collective in their approach, and that is good. But the fielding hasn?t really been up to par,? he said.

?We have been playing to about 40 percent of our potential. But once we get fitter and people like Ramdin (wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin) step up we expect a lot of good things from this team.

?Obviously the players have different goals on tour. Ramdin?s goal is to keep fit for example while Rampaul?s (fast bowler Ravi Rampaul) goal is to get back on track and play for the West Indies.?

In the two matches Clico have been involved in so far, the visitors have cruised along to victory without much resistance from the home opposition.

Still, Gray reckons his team ? in particular some of its younger members ? would have gained something from the experiences.

?We?ve seen some good talent, and I think that with coach Gus Logie, Bermuda is going to progress nicely in the near future.?

Meanwhile, tour organisers have made several changes to the original schedule.

Following today?s clash at the NSC Clico will have tomorrow off to rest.

Domestic 20/20 cricket also returns to Somerset Cricket Club tomorrow night, with St.George?s Cricket Club pitted against Leg Trappers and Somerset against Prison Officers in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Tour action will resume at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday where a National XI will now take on visiting Clico in a 50 overs contest instead of Premier Division champions Southampton Rangers.

Sunday will see Somerset host the final of their domestic 20/20 tournament at 2 p.m. before Clico close out their five-match tour of the Island against a Somerset 20/20 XI at 5.30 p.m. in another 20/20 clash.
