Clubs under fire from BCBC chief
Bermuda Cricket Board of Control president Reggie Pearman yesterday urged all local clubs to play a more active role in conducting the business of cricket.
Speaking amid growing concerns that the sport is currently being run in a "shoddy" manner, the president noted that there was a lack of dialogue between affiliates and the Board and that ultimately the onus was on the clubs to sort matters out.
Cricket in Bermuda is currently being plagued by a drastic shortage of umpires and statisticians, and inadequately prepared pitches.
"When I took over as president of the Board I stated that responsibility falls not only with the Board but also the clubs who have to get more involved," said Pearman.
"These are some of the problems we encountered last year with the way things went. Where's the responsibility?
"The onus is on the clubs, they have to accept more responsibility.
"You have players unaware of certain rules and everything else. Apparently some of this information isn't being disseminated to the cricketers. Perhaps it stops at the office.
"It's getting frustrating. There's just no two ways about it. We can't continue to operate cricket in the manner in which it is presently being run."
Noting that his administration was prepared to help clubs wherever they could, Pearman insisted that everyone had to "knuckle down and do what is required" to make the sport better.
"Maybe we (BCBC) will have to call a special meeting. But basically we just need more responsible people to come together and say `hey look, let's see what we can do about this thing'."
Meanwhile, four weeks into the 2002 season, an official league table has yet to published, leaving clubs up in the air about their current league status.
"They (clubs) are not providing us with the information that they said they would," added Pearman.
"We can't even get the clubs to forward the official results from matches. If we don't have the full official results coming in to us then what can we do.
"If they are not submitting us their reports it's frustrating for us to put out decent standings.
"We (BCBC) provide them (clubs) with a schedule, what more do they expect from us - to come out and score for them!
"They haven't even submitted any names to us to form this development team and that possibility appears to be heading for the scrap heap.
"But if nobody wants to take the bull by the horns and attempt to sort matters out then these issues won't go away."
Pyrford Cricket Club in England chalked up another win over the weekend with Bermudian youngsters Chris Foggo and OJ Pitcher enjoying good knocks.
Foggo scored 26 while Pitcher stroked 33 and also grabbed a wicket in his team's 35-run victory over Old Walcountians Cricket Club.
The local duo will see action today against Kingstonian Cricket Club in the Fuller's Cup competition.
