Clyde cashes in with high series
Ninety one bowlers poured into the Warwick Lanes to take part in the second week of the American Airlines Bowling Spectacular on Tuesday night, confirming the popularity of the annual event now enjoying its 27th anniversary.
The main focus of the tournament is on the handicap division,in which all 91 competed, while 68 from this group also played in the optional scratch division.
Clyde Burgess, competing for the first time this year, walked out with the highest cash prize of the night after taking first place in the handicap division.
Burgess bowled games of 268, 227 and 256 for a 751 series.
Kenneth Simmons also performed well, accumulating a 742 series to secure second place while Russell Harvey finished third on 739.
Other prizewinners on the night included Oscar Andrade (738), Mike McCallum (733), Reginald (Lucky) Pitcher (726), Damien Matthews (724), Kevin Swan (718) and Sandra Ford (713).
Andrade won the top prize for handicap game with his 300 while Ford placed second on 289.
One of Bermuda?s most consistent bowlers, Mike McCallum, topped the scratch division with a high series of 694.
McCallum bowled games of 279, 228 and 187 but had to share first game prize with Andrade who also returned a 279 total.
Vernon Daniels won the second game with 231 and Kevin Swan the third on 233.
Andrade placed second for high series on 675 and Swan third with 661.
?The turnout was great? said tournament director Lionel Dowling. ?We were able to pay out a total of $1,115 in prizes for the night. Hopefully we can get over 100 participants next week.
?The maximum we can handle is 120 but we prefer to keep it at 110 in case a pair of lanes break down.?
The weekly tournaments will continue on each Tuesday evening at 7.00 for the next seven weeks, followed by the finals on August 9.
