Coach Binns makes his mark in Maryland
Bermudian Kimandi Binns continues to make a name for himself coaching football in Maryland, Baltimore.
The former North Village defender recently coached Mardela High School to their best season record in 29 years and a second straight berth in the Bayside Regional South play-offs which begin on Friday.
Mardela, seeded number two for the play-offs, completed the regular season with eight wins, three losses and a draw ? a record not bettered by any of the 1A schools in the Bayside South region.
In his first season as coach, Binns took Mardela all the way to the regional finals where they lost to eventual state champions Pocomoke.
Top seeded Pocomoke defeated Mardela 2-1 in the regular season, and the two teams could end up facing each other again in the regional finals.
?If things go as planned we will meet Pocomoke in the regional final with the winner going onto the state finals,? Binns said.
Mardela have never won a soccer state championship in the school?s history.
?A lot is expected from this current group of players,? the former Reds footballer added.
In addition to capping off another impressive regular season, Binns was chosen as runner-up for the Bayside Coach of the Year Award which went to James M.Bennett High School coach Skip Ruark.
