Coach Brown bides his time
While once-powerful Somerset Trojans will be looking for a speedy return to the top flight of local soccer, club technical director Dennis Brown says he isn't in any hurry.
The former skipper and Bermuda international insists he's more concerned with overall team development than results.
And development, he pointed out, doesn't happen overnight.
"It is definitely not going to be a quick fix," said Brown.
"And I am prepared to stay for the long haul to ensure the developmental process is in place. But if we can achieve promotion this season then we will take it."
Brown took on the role as the club's technical director and senior coach over the summer months after former coach Mark Trott stood down to coach at the junior level following Somerset's relegation from the Premier Division last term.
"The players have responded well and I have been very impressed by their work ethic. It hasn't been easy but they seem to be catching on fairly well," said Brown, who described a one-year absence from local soccer as a "good break".
The former defender, and son of the soil, reckons he's ready for the challenges which lay ahead.
"This is a very good challenge for me and I am looking forward to it because basically I played all of my football up in Somerset," he said.
"It was probably my destiny to go back and coach at Somerset. My main priority is with Somerset's programme - making sure it is running efficiently."
Brown has assembled a new coaching committee at the club comprised of former players George Brangman, Rudy Minors and Conrad Simons with Paul Scope assisting him with the first team.
"Paul has some good football knowledge," he said. "He's played semi-professional in England and has completed a few coaching courses. So it's not just me coaching in Somerset.
"We have a big organisation of coaches who will oversee the various junior programmes, player's attitudes and training - I'm just there to oversee the entire programme."
And to get the job done, Brown is banking on the youth at his disposal.
"We have a couple of teenagers who have really impressed me and certainly I am looking to push them along," he added.
The departures of several key players and having to kick off at 1 p.m. this season, Brown said, was a "blessing in disguise".
"The players that I have now are basically Somerset players and are players who are honest and have the desire to play for Somerset," he said.
"So I am not bothered at all because we have some promising youngsters coming along. And it is good that we are in the First Division. Now I can bring them along at a slower pace."
