Collieson joins CAC squad

Tennis player James Collieson is a surprise addition to Bermuda's Central American and Caribbean Games challenge.

The event gets underway in El Salvador on December 2 and Bermuda Olympic Association have named a squad they hope will return laden with medals.

Missing are the Island's cyclists who cited the unfortunate scheduling of the event for their non-participation but the nation is well represented in other disciplines.

Collieson, who made the first round of this year's XL Capital Bermuda Open, losing out 6-2, 6-1 to US star Taylor Dent, is the sole tennis player who will make the trip south.

Big things are expected of Bermuda's squash team, with director of squash Ross Triffitt hoping his team make the most of their number four seeding at the event. James Stout and Nick Kyme, both of whom will be turning professional in the near future, will be joined by Mel Caines and Richard Brewer.

Xavier James, who competed at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester earlier this year, is the Island's only track and field entrant. That discipline has also been hit by the timing of the event with many athletes coming to the end of a long season.

Sara Lane and Brett Wright will fly the flag in sailing while the Island will also be represented in gymnastics, women's field hockey and tae kwon do.

Bermuda's squad: Tennis - James Collieson; Field hockey - Samantha Adams, Ana Anton Garcia, Jennifer Beech, Caroline Black, Kirsten Butterworth, Lisa DeSilva, Fiona Doe, Melissa Durrant, Hannah Ellison, Kerry Graham, Cathie Hay, Alexandra Lewis, Rebecca Payne, Megan Spurling, Elizabeth Stuart, Sharmini Thamotheram, Lucy Hollis (replacement); Squash - Nick Kyme, Richard Brewer, James Stout, Mel Caines; Tae Kwon Do - Iejaa E.
