Colts aim to prove worth against the title holders
League soccer officially kicks off tomorrow and much of the attention will be focused on Bernard Park where a resurgent Devonshire Colts get first crack at reigning league champions North Village.
Showing glimpses of promise, a Colts side sporting several new faces emerged with a hard fought 2-1 Martonmere Cup win over Somerset Trojans last weekend to begin the new season on a good footing.
Tomorrow, they will attempt to build on that victory by beating Village in their own back yard, though captain Shannon Burgess admits that there remain a few areas that still need to be addressed.
"We are looking to get a positive result no matter who we are up against," said Burgess yesterday.
"It's still the beginning of the season and of course we have a few things that need to be ironed out. But we are more or less just looking at it as the first league game of the season away from home and obviously we're looking to come away with a positive result."
Burgess is fully aware that Village themselves will be out to underline their supremacy.
"North Village are coming off a good season last year," he said. "But this is a new season and I think that the new additions we have are certainly an asset. Guys like Anthony Thomas and Peter Sampson bring a bit of experience in the midfield."
Elsewhere, newcomers to the Premier Division Somerset Eagles and Boulevard will be out to prove that they belong among the Island's top dogs.
Although Eagles may relish the comforts of home, beginning the season in front of a White Hill crowd against current Martonmere Cup champions Devonshire Cougars, their joy could be short lived as the visitors appear to excel on expansive fields such as theirs.
Cougars are also hungry for a first win after losing their first two matches this season - in the Charity Cup final and Martonmere Cup.
"I really think that we have to improve from our last two games," admitted Cougars coach Albert Smith. "But we managed to iron out a few things and this week the guys looked good in training so things should go back to normal.
"It's been more of a mental thing than a physical one so if we come out mentally prepared then we should come out on top."
Further west, Boulevard may be in for a rude baptism against Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club while in what promises to be another match with intrigue, PHC Zebras and Dandy Town square off at St.John's Field.
In the First Division, potential title contenders Southampton Rangers take on Ireland Rangers at Southampton Oval, while Social Club, another team who could possibly emerge as promotion challengers, take on Paget at Bernard Park.
Neighbours St. David's and St. George's will battle it out at Lord's, while current Dudley Eve champions Wolves will have to wait another week before they see action after their opening match against Prospect at BAA Field was postponed by the BFA yesterday because of the shortage of match officials.
