Commercial Cup could be resurrected
Commercial League football teams will meet tonight to discuss changes which insiders believe will see clubs back a new three-tier league with a new division for older players.
And BFA league and cup competition chairman Charles Clarke gave the strongest hint yet that a Commercial Cup competition will be revived.
Clarke said: "No matter what happens, I would love to see a Commercial Cup re-instituted with the final to be played at the National Sports Centre just like all the other cups.
"I cannot say for definite ? the executive will have to approve it ? but I don't foresee any objectors to trying to do that."
Clarke gave few hints about what options would be put to clubs at tonight's meeting about the league structure.
But BFA youth committee member Calvin Blakendal said he believed the options would be keeping the present structure ? which has two divisions of up to a dozen teams each ? and a new three-tier league.
And he believes the new structure has the backing of established clubs.
Blakendal said: "I think the 'C' Division is going to go ahead. I believe the BFA are for it, they just want to make sure there are enough clubs in the 'C' Division to make sure it runs. You need at least eight teams."
He repeated the oft-heard lament that: "Players who are 45 to 50 don't want to be chasing around 25- to 30-year-olds around a pitch. The major clubs want to make sure people play at their own level."
He said he believed established teams such as Somerset, PHC, Dandy Town, St. George's, North Village, Devonshire Rec. and possibly Boulevard were interested in the 'C' league, with many planning to run another Commercial team in a higher division.
Dandy Town Roots, who stormed the 'B' Division at the first attempt last year, are already looking for players for a 'C' division team.
Blakendal said even if the senior 'C' division didn't go ahead, the extra players would help boost the squad.
Clarke stressed nothing had been decided about the league structure and he did not want to reveal too much about the results of the questionnaire which was completed by all but three of the Commercial teams.
That questionnaire went out after a meeting of Commercial clubs in June when the BFA aired some of their plans but did not give concrete options.
Clarke admitted the ambiguous nature of the questionnaire meant answers could be taken in several different ways. Clubs will meet at the BAA clubhouse at 5.45 this evening.
