Cougars ace facing six-week lay-off

Devonshire Cougars forward Heys Wolfe could be sidelined for six weeks following a freak accident during the big cats? weekend draw against Boulevard at BAA Field.

The incident occurred midway through the second half when Wolfe, challenging for possession, tumbled to the ground and then had opponent Conneko Trott land on his left elbow, popping it out of place.

Play was held up for some 25 minutes until an ambulance arrived and took the injured player to hospital, leaving Cougars fans worried over the condition of their key striker.

?When I first looked at his arm I thought ?oh my God?,? recalled Cougars coach Andrew Bascome yesterday.

However, it was later learned the player?s injury was not as serious as originally believed as doctors moved swiftly to put the elbow back in place and Wolfe was discharged from hospital with his injured left arm in a sling.

Admitting the player?s absence could have a ?slight? impact on the team, Bascome found some comfort in the knowledge that he still has an ?abundance of talent? from which to fill the void.

?It?s difficult to replace someone of Heys? ability,? acknowledged Bascome. ?But we will definitely make up the numbers as we still have at least 30 to 40 players training.

?Yes, his absence will have some impact but I don?t think it will be too big an impact considering the team?s overall commitment and the type of players we have.

?Heys could be out between five to six weeks because that?s how long his elbow might take to heal. Then I think the next process would be for the ligaments to heal. And once he is confident with that, then he can return because the elbow is also used for balance and shielding the ball.?

Saturday?s game marked only the player?s third appearance this season after he and sidekick Raymond Beach sat out their team?s first five matches through suspension.

The dynamic duo rejoined their team-mates on the pitch on October 17 during Cougars? 2-1 away loss to Dandy Town at St.John?s Field.

The pair were originally banned until January 1 after being found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute following a verbal spat with Bermuda Football Association (BFA) second vice-president Gregory Grimes and former national coach Kenny Thompson during a February tour match at the National Sports Centre.

However, a Ministry of Youth and Sports arbitration tribunal later overruled the two players? suspensions after discovering a BFA emergency committee had dealt with disciplinary hearing procedures in an inappropriate manner.

Last April Wolfe became the first ever player to score a hat-trick on a losing team in the FA Cup final at the Natuonal Sports Centre.
