Cougars rarin' to go

While the year 2001 in China is synonymous with the horse, symbolically depicting a species possessing grace, beauty and speed, in Bermuda, Devonshire Recreation Club might be hoping this is the year of the Cougar.

In the space of a couple of months, following seasons of virtual anonymity, the Cougars have desperately clawed their way back to the top.

Having recently hoisted the Martonmere Cup, the club's first major trophy for some time, Cougars see the Dudley Eve competition as another opportunity to showcase their talent.

Currently fourth in the standings, the Devonshire club enter the holiday tournament for the first time, meeting neighbours Devonshire Colts in their opener tomorrow night with prospective battles against Wolves or PHC to follow.

Assistant coach Albert Smith, overall generally pleased with his team's performances despite their recent exit from the FA Cup, believes the team are currently reaping the benefits of vigorous pre-season training in addition to a disciplined approach.

And he says club camaraderie, following the loss of stalwarts Galvin Butterfield and Shawn Smith through injury, is helping to keep spirits high.

"I feel that we have had a fairly decent first half to the season, the guys have certainly put in the work," said Smith. "We are fortunate to have tremendous depth in our team. You are only as good as your depth and a lot of things can occur over the course of the season."

Cougars possess one of the most explosive attacks on the Island in the form of Heys Wolfe, Raymond Beach, Mark Smith and former Southampton Rangers' forward Craig Darrell, but they all might be tested by a tough Colts defence.

"Colts always pose a challenge for us," added Smith. "They are a good team, especially in cup games, so it is important that we come prepared to play because it is not going to be easy. We have to play consistent over the holiday, apply ourselves, and stick to the basics."
