Cougars too good despite misses

Despite missing a string of opportunities, losing Martonmere Cup finalists a week ago Devonshire Cougars were still able to score an emphatic victory over Wolves in this FA Cup first round clash at Devonshire Rec. yesterday.

As had been expected, Cougars came way with the goods but it was a far from inspiring performance during a contest which they dominated.

The Premier Division side?s attack constantly misfired with the main culprits being their two sharpshooters Heys Wolfe and Ray Beach who between them missed half a dozen golden chances.

Though ultimately well beaten, First Division Wolves should have put their opponents under pressure early, but veteran striker Kenny Hill blew an easy chance from just three yards out when he placed his shot wide of the post after three minutes.

Beach put Cougars ahead after nine minutes when he nodded home a cross from Shaki Minors but Wolves continued to press forward and missed further chances with Nirobi Smith and veteran Dion Wainwright the offenders.

Wolfe put Cougars ahead 2-0 after 17 minutes when he headed home a Minors? cross but that was the end of the first-half scoring.

Wolves watched in agony as defender Jeremy DeShields cleared off his goal-line to prevent a certain goal after 20 minutes and just before the half Wainwright and Hill both failed to convert.

Cougars gained a decisive edge when play re-started but Beach and Wolfe continued to struggle, placing countless shots wide of goal or directly at ?keeper David Trott.

Kwame Steede headed home Cougars? third goal to kill off Wolves for good after 70 minutes while Shaki Minors got the fourth 12 minutes later, both goals coming from crosses by substitute Stevie Wade.

Wolves got a consolation goal three minutes from time when Anthony Davis stroked home a penalty.
