Court queen Butterfield targets three more titles

Gill Butterfield will begin her quest for a record three more titles during the BLTC Invitational Championships at the Coral Beach Tennis Club this morning when she teams with Gretchen Devlin to take on the American pair of Maureen O?Berg and Faith Bascome in the Ladies? 55 Doubles final.

Butterfield will later play in the Mixed Doubles and the Ladies? 45 Doubles finals.

She collected her first piece of silverware yesterday when she defeated Bea Steiner 6-4, 6-2 to win the Ladies? 45 singles title, and teamed with Kelly Holland to win the Ladies? Open doubles crown.

Devlin, of Rye, New York, has returned to Bermuda following a five-year absence and picked up where she left off by reaching two finals. She will later team up with her fellow Rye resident Nanny Vanneck in the Ladies? 45 Doubles final.

Meanwhile, Kittie Flathers of Boston, making her first appearance in Bermuda, will partner the veteran of all veterans Dick Mount in the semi-finals of the Century Mixed when they take on the favoured pair of Janet Greene and Earl Leader who waltzed past the husband and wife team of Mac and Craig Brand in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Mount, known for his generosity, was at it again yesterday. Cruising to victory against Rosemary Asch and Bob Brown 5-1, he and his partner lost that set 7-6 (3) before rebounding to win 7-5 in the third.

It was a fitting rebound from two days ago when Mount and his partner lost to Vernal Davis and Michael Beautyman having led 5-1 and 30-15.

Yesterday Davis and Beautyman won the Men?s 55 doubles final with a classic 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ron Groff and Craig Brand.

Earlier Earl Leader had mesmerised George Lynch in the Men?s 55 Singles final, winning 6-2, 6-3 in less than 90 minutes. ?There was nothing that I could have done today that would have changed the outcome?, said Lynch. ?He was just everywhere that he shouldn?t have been when I hit the ball there.?

This was a follow-up to the masterful performance Leader displayed against Beautyman in the second round on Tuesday.

Janet Greene continued her winning ways when she and Leader made surprisingly short work of Mac and Craig Brand in the quarter-finals of the Century Mixed. Playing three weeks after having her appendix removed, the Bostonian iron lady held her own throughout the contest and with Leader playing his best tennis in weeks, kept their experienced opponents off balance throughout the 80-minute contest.

Maureen O?Berg, who keeps everyone guessing with her slicing back and forehand strokes, took the Ladies? 45 Singles title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Rosemary Asch while Butterfield and Kelly Holland won the Ladies? Doubles title with a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jo Tucker and Tracey Berrell.
