Cricket clubs line up overseas tours

A tour by St. David's cricket team to Trinidad next May is just one of many being planned by local clubs.

At least three others have now expressed their intention to travel abroad.

Western Counties champions Willow Cuts are hoping to travel to Canada, county rivals Southampton Rangers to England, while Somerset Cricket Club are in the process of financing a 10-day excursion to Barbados to coincide with the third Test match between West Indies and India between April 12-16.

Somerset coach Winston Reid said if the trip was confirmed, it would prove beneficial to all of his players but in particular the younger members, some of whom would get to see their first Test match.

"We hope to be playing approximately three matches - the teams have yet to be announced but we are going to come up against some good opposition who we can learn from, especially our youngsters," said Reid.

"It will be a tremendous experience for them to play in different conditions on faster, firmer wickets, but more importantly it will be an opportunity for them to play against opposition of a higher calibre.

"The main purpose of the tour will be to expose the youngsters not only to Test level cricket but also to broaden their horizons."

Willow Cuts skipper Richard Basden preferred not to comment on his team's plans, pending Bermuda Cricket Board of Control's approval, while Rangers have yet to disclose further details of their planned tour.

St. David's have already secured clearance for their trip to Trinidad.
