Cricket fans left seething after CableVision blunder
While England and Australia were battling it out in one of the most enthralling Test matches in recent times, viewers in Bermuda were left watching the West Indies competing in the relatively low key Indian Oil Cup one-day series.
Despite paying $75 to CableVision for an Ashes package that promised live coverage of what is turning into an epic series, customers on the Island spent their Saturday and Sunday morning watching the one-day tournament instead ? with a taped version of the Ashes coming on later in the day.
A number of subscribers contacted over the weekend, expressing fury at the lack of timely coverage ? especially given the excitement of the match.
"It is just not good enough," said one cricket fan, requesting anonymity for fear of an interruption of service.
"I've paid $75 to not watch the most important two days of one of the best Test matches ever. I suppose I could have spent the day avoiding hearing the result and then watching the taped version later but, to be honest, I couldn't wait and I shouldn't have been forced to in the Internet age when I could find out the result almost straight away.
"It is absolutely outrageous. If I had paid for the West Indies game then fair enough, but they advertised an Ashes package and that is what I paid for ? surely the least they could have done is let me watch the Ashes.
"They have denied us two days of cricket, so what they should do now is offer us a partial refund and guarantee this disgrace won't be repeated ? but even a refund isn't really good enough, I wanted to watch the cricket and they wouldn't let me.
"They always talk about valued customers but if you value customers you would know exactly what sport means to people and how angry they are going to be if you take it away from them without warning."
A press statement from Bermuda CableVision stated "that due to conflicting schedules between the West Indies and the Ashes Series cricket matches which aired over the weekend, the West Indies match was offered free of charge and the Ashes Series aired in tape delay format".
And general manager Jeremy Elmas added: "Because the Ashes Series aired in tape delay format later than originally expected, some customers had to wait to view the event or did not see the event at all.
"We apologise to our valued customers for any inconvenience this may have caused. Moving forward, no scheduling conflicts are expected and the Ashes Series will air in live format, at the previously scheduled time of 5.45 a.m. on the scheduled game days."
CableVision are offering customers a full refund if they cancel by this Friday.
