Cricket set for cash boost

Bermuda moved two steps closer to a six-figure cash injection as detailed correspondence between the Bermuda Cricket Board and Allen Stanford?s $28m Twenty20 tournament organisers officially began.

The Texan billionaire is ploughing the money into regional cricket with the BCB showing keen initial interest in taking part in next autumn?s event, which would see them net $100,000 for signing up and $10,000 a month leading up to the 18-team competition.

And that initial interest has now moved on to discussions with the tournament organisers, although the cricket administrators still need more information before they actually put pen to paper.

?We were excited when the plans were first announced last week and that excitement is escalating now that further details have been released,? said BCB chief executive Neil Speight, who said the Board had received e-mails this week from the organisers.

?It all sounded too good to be true but it seems to be coming true and they have given us more information now. There is still a way to go before we sign up officially but, of course, in principle we would want to be involved in this.

?We have ambitious plans for what we want to do in our preparations for the World Cup and anything that could help us do that would be of interest.?

Meanwhile Stanford is delighted at the interest his cash boost has created in Caribbean cricket.

?We are just thrilled with the response from around the world to this announcement, it is exactly what we hoped for,? explained the Antiguan-based entrepreneur.

?We wanted everyone to stand up and take notice of cricket in the West Indies and what everyone involved in this tournament is trying to achieve.

?That is what exactly what has happened. I have received dozens of e-mails and calls from all over the world from people who are very excited about the tournament and the Super Star Team concept.?

The Super Star team that was devised by Stanford will be chosen by the legends ? former West Indies players ? on his Board of Directors from the 18 teams participating in the Twenty20 tournament next year, which is offering a $1m first prize.

This Super Star Team will then play two matches against invited international teams shortly after the end of the tournament. The prize money for each of these single matches is $5 Million, winner takes all.

The next step in the process is providing the funds to the countries, which will begin very soon.

Each of the legends on the board has ?adopted? a country and will be visiting their boards and helping them finalise their plans.

?Mr. Stanford is a businessman and he has goals and timelines, he wants to give this money to these boards now. He wants them to begin their preparation and start reaping the benefits of the programme right away,? board member Wes Hall explained.
