Cup Final cash helps boost Borden Fund

The Delby Borden Memorial Scholarship Fund was the beneficiary of a donation from Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) this week.

Local cricket?s governing body pumped $1,164 from gate receipts collected during last weekend?s Belco Cup Final at Lords into the scholarship fund named after the late St.David?s and Bermuda national cricket team early order batsman.

Borden, well respected in the cricket community, suffered a heart attack at his St.David?s Road residence and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital a month after his marriage to second wife Wendy and only hours after celebrating his 44th birthday.

The former St.David?s hard-hitting batsman was a member of Bermuda?s 1982 ICC Trophy squad that narrowly missed qualifying for the World Cup under Barbados-born skipper Colin Blades, served as manager of the Island?s 2004 Americas Championship squad that successfully qualified for last July?s historical ICC Trophy tournament in Ireland and was the father of Bermuda off spinner and early order bat Delyone.

The Borden Memorial Trust was established last year in honour of the late cricketer to raise funds that can be used to support future St.David?s cricket players with their education.

Delyone is the first Islander to have benefited from the fund.

Speaking on behalf of the BCB, chief executive Neil Speight said: ?The Board have recognised the value of this community effort, particularly in the memory of a former national player, Board member and cricket administrator that we all remember so fondly ? Delby Borden.

?The BCB once again thought that it was a fitting tribute to Delby?s honour and entirely within the spirit of the Belco Cup, which has always had the family and community values to the forefront, to once again donate monies raised at the event to the trust.

?It is also a testament to all the Board members, employees and volunteers that worked so hard at the event that this level of support was made possible.?

Sponsors of last weekend?s cricket spectacle, Belco, donated $3,000 to the BCB in support of their various ongoing activities and also $500 to Somerset Cricket Club for the hosting the semi-final between Western Stars and eventual runners-up St.David?s.

St.David?s have finished bridesmaids in the last three finals.

This year?s winners, Southampton Rangers, also received $1,500, runners-up St.David?s $1,000 while beaten semi-finalists Stars and Bailey?s Bay each pocketed $500.

Rangers? talented young all-rounder Malachi Jones received $300 after being chosen as man-of-the-match during his team?s eight-wicket triumph over the Islanders in the final at Lords.

Belco had planned to give awards to any cricketer who scored a century during the two-day competition in recognition of the utility company?s centennial year. However, no one reached that milestone but the offer has now been extended to Cup Match.

The Belco Century Award consists of a $1,000 donation to a charity named by the scoring team as well as a $250 electricity credit to the batsman.

All Premier Division clubs are facing a busy weekend with two full rounds having been scheduled today and tomorrow.

In today?s key match, Rangers host struggling Western Stars at Southampton Oval, Social Club and Warwick lock horns at Devonshire Rec, Somerset host St.David?s at Somerset Cricket Club and Flatts and Bailey?s Bay do battle at Lords.

Tomorrow sees Stars hosting St.David?s at St.John?s Field, Flatts taking on Warwick at Lords, Social Club pitted against Bailey?s Bay at Devonshire Rec and Rangers hosting Somerset at Southampton Oval.

In First Division play, St.George?s take on Police at Wellington Oval, Somerset Bridge host Cleveland at White Hill Field, Leg Trappers take on PHC at Sea Breeze Oval and Willow Cuts meet Devonshire at Somerset Cricket Club.
