Cup final moved to avoid rugby clash

Next month's Martonmere Cup final will be played at either Lords or Wellington Oval, Bermuda Football Association (BFA) League and Cup competitions chairman Charles Clarke revealed yesterday.

The traditional November 11 Remembrance Day final was originally scheduled to be held at the National Sports Centre (NSC). But it was learned yesterday that BFA officials had decided to move the final of the 34-year-old competition ? played in honour of former Bermuda Governor Lord Martonmere ? to an alternative venue due to a scheduling conflict with the annual World Rugby Classic to be held at the NSC North Field on the same day.

"At this point we know the game is not going to be held at the Stadium because there will be rugby going on the same day we would normally have the Martonmere Cup final," Clarke told .

"Because of the Rugby Classic technically we had no other choice. They put in a bid year after year for the same time each time, and this has been going on for quite some time.

"But we have to take into consideration that rugby is taking major precedence and are probably paying much more than us for the use of the Stadium. We are only asking for use of it for one day whereas rugby have it for a period of a few days.

"So rather than go down that road we can move to some other venue."

However, when contacted yesterday deputy chairman of the NSC's Board of Trustees Sean Tucker said he was unaware of the BFA's final decision, while insisting the multi-million dollar facility was more than capable of hosting both events on the same day.

"This is certainly not a scheduling conflict from our standpoint," Tucker said. "The rugby is on the North Field and the BFA requested the South Field and it is still booked. And as far as we know they haven't told us anything."

Tucker said one of the main issues was parking facilities, something Board members had "no control of".

"It's very limited parking on site, and all parking is arranged through the neighbours like Cedarbridge Academy, Prospect Primary, the Police and Devonshire Recreation Club," he added.

"From our standpoint there's no scheduling conflict because the Sports Centre can accommodate both events at the same time quite easily."

Clarke, however, confirmed that next month's Martonmere Cup final would take place at either Lords or Wellington Oval.

He said: "We looked at club venues as we have done this in the past and decided to have the final played at one of the grounds in the East End. And we will be discussing with both clubs the feasibility of hosting this particular match."

The association is expected to announce a final venue for the final "in the very near future", according to Clarke.

BFA officials initially met last Tuesday to discuss possible alternatives.

This year is not the first time the BFA have scheduled the Martonmere Cup final at an alternative venue.

In 2001-02 Lords hosted the final, Wellington Oval in 2002-03 and Somerset Cricket Club in 2003-04.
