Cup Match changes for both clubs

@$:BODY-FRANK:PLAYERS vying for Cup Match spots will have plenty to play for tomorrow in the final trial matches at Somerset and St. George's Cricket Clubs where about 12 changes will be made to the two teams. BODY-FRANK-2:For the first time a senior national team tour has clashed with Cup Match robbing both teams of several of their top players and forcing the clubs to fill the voids. Even so, both the champions and challengers are confident strong teams will be fielded next week when the match is filmed live in its entirety for the first time in its illustrious history. The east enders have the biggest challenge on their hands, forced to make six changes because Rodney Trott, OJ Pitcher, James Celestine, George O'Brien, Oronde Bascome and Chris Foggo will all travel to Belfast next week for Bermuda's participation in the Twenty20 World Cup qualifying tournament which runs from August 2 to 5. Somerset have three players from last year's team on that same trip ¿ Stephen Outerbridge, Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock and Jekon Edness. Combine that with the expected absence of Derrick Brangman and Dean Stephens and the challengers will also be making several changes from last year's team which played in the rain-affected draw at Wellington Oval."We knew we had to make three changes for sure ¿ Sluggo, Jekon and Stephen who have to be replaced," said Mark Trott, chairman of the Somerset selectors. "At this stage it would also appear that Dean and Derrick also, unless something changes dramatically. We've had a few meeting and so we're ready for any eventuality."The absence of so many players means that both clubs have switched their sights to up-and-coming young players. Several members of the Bermuda under 18 team are expected to be featured in the final trial matches on Saturday. The team competed in the recently concluded Sir Garfield Sobers Tournament in Barbados and is expected back on the island today. Jordan DeSilva, Marcus Johnson, Kevon Fubler and Deunte Darrell are being looked at by the west enders while St. George's see the likes of Tre Govia and Regino Smith as future players.Somerset also have Dion Stovell ¿ who missed last year with an injury ¿ back in contention while Dennis Musson, Stephen Bremar, Sheroy Fubler, Sammy Robinson and Del Hollis are also in contention. Kwame Tucker and Ricardo Brangman are the two contenders for the wicketkeeping spot being vacated by Jekon Edness. "There will be a number of players knocking on the door on Saturday and for some it will probably come down to what they do in that final match," said the Somerset selector."We have enough young players who, if they don't make it this year, we want to encourage. We are confident we can put out a team that can represent Somerset well over the two days. "We had already made contingency (plans) in respect of Dean and Derrick if they are not available. They haven't played any cricket this year so come Saturday if they are available it would be like Charlie (Marshall) a few years ago when he just came off suspension and scored a century in the final trial game and then scored 80-something in Cup Match."That century in the final trial match in the 1987 season was Marshall's first game that year after serving a ban. After reclaiming a Cup Match place he followed up that century with an unbeaten 85 in the first innings at Somerset as St. George's won an exciting match. Some 28 years after his debut, the veteran left-hander is now the highest run-maker in Cup Match history and hoping for at least one more Cup Match appearance at the age of 47. But Lewis Foggo, chairman of the St. George's selectors, acknowledges that Marshall and Clay Smith, the two senior players in the St. George's team, are nearing the end of their careers."In moving forward guys have to start filtering into the team, we have Charlie who I'm sure won't be around too much longer and Clay Smith who won't be around too much longer, so we have to start filtering youngsters in anyway so they can get the experience," said Foggo.St. George's do have some players seeking a recall, namely Ryan Steede, Troy Hall, Gregg Foggo, Glenn Blakeney and Jason Anderson, while Fiqre Crockwell and Jason Anderson are the two contenders for the wicketkeeping spot that has opened up because Chris Foggo will be with the Bermuda team. As well as Foggo's spot to fill as wicketkeeper, the club have to find two opening batsmen as Oronde Bascome will also be in Ireland. Landro Minors of St. David's could be a strong contender while Blakeney has opened the innings before in Cup Match. "Cup Match brings its own excitement and regardless of who's playing it's going to be an exciting match," Foggo promised. "Hopefully the players give us some headaches (on selection night). The more headaches the better. They can all come and produce on the day and give us plenty of options. We will be taking into account what they have been doing all year, too."
