Cup team beaten again
Bermuda?s ill-fated Davis Cup campaign went from bad to worse on Thursday in El Salvador when the under-strength side were crushed 3-0 by Barbados, losing every set in the process.
Following on from their equally heavy defeat to St. Lucia the day before, number one seed Jevon Whitter lost in straight sets to Russell Moseley 6-0, 6-3 while Barbados? Haydn Lewis put the outcome of the tie beyond doubt with 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Bermuda?s Romar Douglas.
The dead doubles rubber also went to the Bajans, as Damien Applewhaite and Michael Date defeated Douglas and Tony Thompson 6-1, 6-2.
Needing to finish in either first or second place to gain promotion to Division III of the Americas Zone, Bermuda will now be consigned to another year in the lowest division of the region.
David Thomas makes up the four-man team in Central America, but has yet to make his Cup debut.
Top players like James Collieson, Jensen Bascome and Gavin Manders were unavailable for the Davis Cup this year for a variety of reasons, making Bermuda?s task an almost impossible one on the red clay of the Maya Country Club in the capital San Salvador.
Bermuda were due to take on the US Virgin Islands yesterday afternoon, but the result was not through by press time.
