Davis Cup despair

With just one tie left in their ill-fated Davis Cup campaign, Bermuda are still yet to pick up even a set.

The under-strength side lost their third straight series 3-0, this time going down to Panama in their Group IV encounter ? ensuring there will be no promotion for the team this year.

In the opener, teenager David Thomas in his Davis Cup debut went down to Arnulfo Courtney 6-4, 6-0 and then Romar Douglas was beaten 6-0, 6-3 by Alberto Gonzalez. Things didn?t improve in the dead doubles rubber where Thomas and Jovan Whitter were beaten by Gonzalez?s Alberto and Jean Miguel 7-5, 6-2.

Last night they were due to take on the US Virgin Islands in their final game and, no doubt, would have been desperate to pick up at least one set before heading home from El Salvador. The result was not available at Press time.

Top players like James Collieson, Jensen Bascome and Gavin Manders were unavailable for the Davis Cup this year for a variety of reasons, making Bermuda?s task an almost impossible one on the red clay of the Maya Country Club in the capital San Salvador.
